The Mersey Gateway Project

Bridge users are able to reduce the cost of tolls in a number of different ways by investing in one of the monthly passes (cars and small vans only) to cap the total cost or registering with the toll provider to save up to 10% on the cost of each trip.

How do I save with the monthly unlimited travel pass?
You will be able to register with the toll provider and buy a monthly unlimited travel pass for £90 per month to get unlimited travel across either bridge at any time of day.

The monthly unlimited travel pass is available to cars and small vans only (Class 2 vehicles with small vans under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight).

How do I save with the monthly off-peak travel pass?
You will be able to register with the toll provider and buy a monthly off-peak travel pass for £60 per month to get unlimited travel at off-peak times (between 10am to 4pm and 7pm to 7am Monday to Friday and all times on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).

The monthly off-peak travel pass is available to cars and small vans only (Class 2 vehicles with small vans under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight).

How much will I save by buying a monthly pass?

The saving will vary depending on how much you cross the bridges in Halton. For people who cross the river a lot the savings will be significant.

For example, if you cross the river an average of four times a day that adds up to 120 one-way trips over a 30-day month.

At the sticker registered toll price of £1.80 for a one-way journey this would cost £216, so buying the £90 monthly unlimited travel pass would save you £126 a month.

If you made the same number of journeys five days a week rather seven days a week the saving would be a minimum of £54 a month.

How many trips do I have to make a month to make it worthwhile buying a monthly unlimited travel pass?

If you make more than 50 one-way trips or 25 return journeys per month then it will be worth you buying a £90 monthly unlimited travel pass. If you make fewer than 50 trips in a month then the best option for you will be to register for a sticker account and pay the £1.80 toll for each trip.

How many trips do I have to make a month to make it worthwhile buying a monthly off-peak pass?
If you make more than 35 one-way trips purely at off-peak times (between 10am to 4pm and 7pm to 7am Monday to Friday and all times on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays) and very few or no journeys during peak times (between 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm Monday to Friday), then the £60 monthly off-peak pass might be a better option for you.

Who can buy a monthly pass?
Anyone can buy a monthly pass – you do not have to be a Halton resident to get one.
How do I save 5% on toll fees as a video-registered user?
You will be able to register with the toll provider and, for a £5 one-off fee, use the bridges for a 5% discount on the standard cost of each trip, making it £1.90 for a one-way trip in a car or a small van.

Drivers in other vehicles such as HGVs, minibuses and coaches will also be able to save 5% on their fees by becoming video registered.

How do I save 10% on toll fees as a sticker registered user?

You will be able to register with the toll provider and, for a £5 one-off fee, get a special sticker to be displayed in your vehicle that will save you 10% on the standard cost of each trip, making it £1.80 for a one-way trip in a car or small van.

If you drive a larger vehicle such as an HGV, minibus or coach you will also be able to save 10% on your fees by becoming sticker registered.

How will I pay the toll once I am registered as a user?
Once you are registered, then as you drive across either of the bridges, toll payment will be taken automatically from your registered account at the point of crossing.

If you register for a sticker or video account you will be able to pre-pay an amount into your account, similar to a “pay as you go” mobile phone contract. Users will have the option of automatically topping-up their account from a designated bank account.
